For various types of civil infrastructure projects, the
physical nature of the soil must be understood in addition
to it's chemical properties prior to commencement of design
or construction. This is determined by means of a Geotechnical
Investigation which typically involves obtaining and analyzing
borehole samples of the in-situ soil. Recommendations
based on the findings of the Geotechnical Investigation
can include pavement design, slope stability, footing/foundation
design and rehabilitation measures. Balcony and parking
structure condition surveys with rehabilitation recommendations
have also been provided to property management clients.

The Environmental Protection Act of the Province of Ontario
requires that the potential impacts of an infrastructure
project on the environment are identified by means of
an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) process. The ESA
study often occurs in two phases; the Phase I ESA and
Phase II ESA. the Phase I study normally involves a review
of available records and site visit observations. The
Phase II scope definition is typically outlined as part
of the Phase I recommendations and may not always be necessary.
When deemed appropriate, however, the Phase II scope usually
covers further testing such as soil chemistry analysis.
